Capitulo Dos: Me duele el cerebro

9/15/2010
Today may possibly be the best day yet. Last week my friend Senora Lopez invited me to go to church with her so this morning I packed into a truck with her and her two teenage sons and her maid and her Senor Lopez (turns out she is married to the Honduran director of the school!) We drove about 45 minutes to the town called Kennedy (after our president who helped establish the town.) The church is called "Santidad" -not sure what denomination. I was SOOO glad I drank coffee this morning because I used every ounce of energy to translate that message into English. I was so excited about how much I understood but I still couldn't quite figure out the main point of the message. Or maybe there wasn't one? Then they treated me to papusas for lunch. It was a thick corn tortilla filled with creamyness and pork topped with cooked onions and cabbage salad. It was probably the first time I've ever been able to have a real deep meaningful conversation in Spanish. Not sure how that happened since I'm definitely not fluent yet. At one point they were talking about how much they appreciated the North American teachers who came down but they were sad because they only stay for only 1-3 years because the teachers are mostly single and they want to get married or be near their families. "But not you Gina," they said, "because we are going to be your family."
awwwww. It melted my heart. I hope they really will adopt me because I'm very fond of them and then I can stay here forever. ;) So then I came home and my brain was short-circuiting from all the Spanish. I couldn't even speak a full English sentence to my room mate so I took a little nap until I was gently awakened by earth shaking thunder.

It's 6:00 and I just got home from a looong day of working on my classroom preparations. Only 1 more day and soooo much left to do! Now I am eating arroz con pollo prepared by Ninfa, the lovely, marvelous, wonderful, stupendous, dear who comes to cook and clean for us two days a week. My floor smells like flowers, my dishes are clean and my shoes are in a perfect row in my closet. *sigh* I will not die afterall.
